Vodka & Traditional Snacks with a Local Family is a tour for real foodies where you can try drinks, snacks and other local delights. The tour lasts for two and a half hours and includes not only tasting but making traditional dishes. It is run at a family studio where everything is ready for a proper cooking workshop. When you arrive, you’ll put an apron and get straight to work.
To start, you will try a variety of Russian snacks including pancakes with red caviar, butter or sour cream and a dish with boiled potato, butter and local herbs. Afterwards, you will learn how to make homemade ‘pelmeni’, a type of dumpling, which, of course, you will try at the end.
For extra treats, you will taste sandwiches with herring and onion, toast with garlic, pickles, mushrooms, and lard. Lard is a traditional topping on toast and is surprisingly tasty and healthy in small portions.
As for drinks, you will try two types of Russian vodka, tinctures, and hooch. The drinks are made and served by your hosts. They will tell you about the ingredients they use, different flavors and how they are made. Each drink is served in a frozen shot glass.
Local family members who speak English will tell you about Russian cuisine, homemade cooking and meal serving traditions dating back several centuries. It is a fantastic experience for a first-time visit to Russia.
